Pastoral Formation

[Seminarian at Convalescent Hospital]During their years in the seminary, students dedicate a specific amount of time to supervised field education. The principal objectives of the program are to provide opportunities for multicultural ministry experience, to learn effective collaboration with Church laity, and to reflect theologically on the life and mission of the priesthood.

First year students visit local convalescent hospitals. Students may choose to do one unit of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) as their hospital ministry requirement.  Second year students choose ministry in the following areas: high school teaching; youth crisis counseling; correctional welfare; working with the homeless and disadvantaged; domestic violence shelters; and in service to people with AIDS and their families.  After the second year, most students engage in a two-semester internship.  A three-week hospital placement follows in either the third or fourth year.  Once ordained to the diaconate, seminarians serve as diaconal ministers in their parishes.
